The cycle of poems Carmina Burana is consistent in scope, subject matter, and tone with other secular works of the medieval period, such as Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Boccaccio's de Cameron. Carl Orff's interpretation capitalizes on the inherent satire of the genre through musical contrasts and contradictions. See:
